Samsung i750 news: approved in USA by FCC + to be presented at CeBIT 2006

Samsung i750 news: approved in USA by FCC + to be presented at CeBIT 2006

It’s been a long time coming, but Samsung’s i750 smartphone that we saw back in March last year has finally made its way to the US — well, at least to the FCC website. It’s very similar to Samsung’s own i730 except that it replaces the QWERTY keyboard with a numeric keypad, the EV-DO with EDGE, the 1.3 megapixel camera with a 2 megapixel one, and the SD slot with TransFlash.

Last year, at CeBIT 2005, we have seen Samsung presenting the Samsung i750 Pocket PC phone (the one to the left) and now German magazine Connect is reporting that at CeBIT 2006 Samsung will be presenting this phone again, but this time with additional features:

apparently i750 will be presented with OCR software that will run in this phone and will convert images taken with the 2 megapixel camera of this phone to texts, that will be imported to pocket Outlook.

So we guess that is mixing it up quite a bit, but the form factor has remained the same, Bluetooth and WiFi are still here, and unfortunately so is the OS — Windows Mobile 2003 SE is still alive on this phone which doesn’t even have a ship date yet.

BenQ’s new 6 megapixel DC-E600 with “Lens-Eye”

BenQ’s new 6 megapixel DC-E600 with “Lens-Eye”

BanQ's

BenQ’s with the PMA just around the corner we’re starting to see some cameras being announced in an effort to get the jump on the competition, and BenQ is joining the fray with their new DC-E600 shooter. It’s a compact 6 megapixel camera with a 2.5-inch LCD and 30fps VGA movie recording, but the real interesting part here is the 2D-Rotating “Lens-Eye” that does - something.

Wie hätten Sie es gerne ? Machen Sie ein Photo und schneiden Sie den Teil aus den Sie verwenden bzw. speichern wollen - oder ändern Sie Auflösung und Format direkt.

There is a Panoramic Focus as well, that also does some undescribed activity, and the better Quality for pictures but seems related to the Lens-Eye. We suppose there will be info as to these mystery features soon enough, but if anyone could fill us in that would be great.

Camera

Pentax just announced three new compact digicams they’ll turn out at the Photo Maketing Association trade show in a couple of weeks. The 0.77-inch thin, 6 megapixel Optio T10 (pictured) has a run-o-the-mill 3x zoom but is one of just a few compact shooters to offer-up a touch-sensitive 3-inch LCD — the current max in this class.

The Pentax Optio M10, T10 and W10 will all ship this March, aimed at three different segments of the market. The entry-level M10 offers a six megapixel imager, 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5″ LCD display in a compact, affordable package priced at $229.95.

High-quality images assured by a 3X optical zoom lens and 6.0 effective megapixels

The Optio M10 incorporates a high-performance 3X optical zoom lens, which offers an angle-of-view coverage equivalent to 35mm to 105mm in the 35mm format. This versatile zoom lens allows the user to capture a variety of subjects — from landscape to snapshots and portraits — in perfect composition by means of effortless fingertip operation. Its six-element, five-group optics includes two aspherical lens elements to effectively compensate various aberrations, while optimizing the performance of 6.0 effective megapixels.

The Optio W10 offers a waterproof, dustproof body that will attract fans of the great outdoors. The W10 is rated JIS Class 8 Waterproof and JIS Class 5 dustproof, and combines a six megapixel imager, 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5″ LCD display at a price of $300. Finally, the Optio T10 offers a six megapixel imager and 3x optical zoom lens as well, but boosts the LCD to a higher-resolution touchscreen type, with an approachable icon-based on-screen interface. The T10 will be priced at $349.95.

Despite its compact dimensions, the Optio M10 features a large, low-reflection 2.5-inch color LCD monitor. Its auto LCD dimmer function automatically adjusts backlight brightness according to the incident-light level, making it possible for the user to view the screen comfortably, whether shooting in a dimly lit indoor setting or outdoors in the bright sun. This not only assures quick, effortless confirmation of images both during shooting and playback, but also facilitates the reading and selection of on-screen menus for swift, efficient camera operation.

In order to assure best results with minimal effort, the Optio M10 offers the convenient Green Mode, which automatically and instantly sets all factors — including exposure, sensitivity and white balance — to the optimum levels, with a single push of the green button on the back panel. Since this user-friendly mode eliminates complicated camera operations completely, it lets even first-time digital camera users to take beautiful, high-quality images with minimal effort.

The W10 is an update to Pentax’s underwater camera lineup featuring 6 megapixels, a reflection-free LCD, and stamped with JIS Class 8 waterproof and Class 5 dustproof ratings. Rounding out their PMA roster is the new M10 offering such middling features as 6 megapixels, a 2.5-inch LCD, and 3x optical zoom. All three offer SD expansion and should drop next month — the T10 for $350, the W10 for “under $300″ and the M10 for a cool $230. More pics after the break.

Consumer electronics retail hell

Shopping with Mrs Tosh for a new digital camera over the weekend was a reminder of just how dreadful offline gadget hunting is. The requirement was a digital camera for less than £100, and around 3 megapixels or better. Look online, and the task seems pretty simple. In bricks ‘n’ mortar world, it’s quite hard. John Lewis seemed uninterested in selling something for less than £200.

Dixons - surely a definition of hell, with some strident beep echoing round the store every ten seconds and a weary collection of merchandise - was utterly useless (Can anyone tell me how, exactly, Dixons prospers? Parent company DSG International announces interim results on January 18, and I’ll be very interested to see if - in today’s testing high street environment - they show any signs of suffering from the dire, dire shopping experience they offer).
