LG Electronics India Ltd is planning to increase its local sourcing of components for its made-in-India GSM handsets from the current 20 per cent to 50 per cent by the end of this year with component manufacturers from Korea, Taiwan and Europe setting up plants near its Ranjangaon plant in Pune.
Till about a month ago, a company official admits, the company was simply assembling GSM handsets as all components were being imported from Korea. It started sourcing chargers and packing from domestic vendors one month ago which took its local sourcing of components to 20 per cent.
The company has set its eyes on atleast 50 per cent local sourcing of components in value terms, if not units terms, by the end of this year, said H S Bhatia, product group head, GSM mobile phones, LGEIL.

If you believe good things come in small packages then you will love the new LG JM53 Portable Digital Player which was unveiled at CES last week. It is an 8GB media player with a nice little screen. So what, you say? Well, chances are it is smaller than your cell phone. It measures just 3.9” x 1.9” x 0.55”. Like I said, small.
The small wonder does audio in all the formats you would expect – MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG. Video is in MPEG4. The pictures will look great on the screen. It’s only 1.77”, but the 260,000 colors and the OLED will make the video look great. All of it is powered by a battery that boasts 30 hours of life on a single charge. It doesn’t get much better than that.
The interface is unique and three-dimensional. Navigation is done by the index finger. LG also includes intuitive music management software to help you keep track of your tunes. No word yet when this tiny machine will be available or what it will cost.

As the number two mobile phone manufacturer in Korea, LG Electronics has its eyes set on the top spot currently held by Samsung. Today, the company unveiled its mobile strategy for 2006, including a goal of shipping 70 million units worldwide. WCDMA handsets will become a major focus this year, as well as more mega-pixel phones and EV-DO technology. Moreover, with the expansion of GSM into open markets in Asia, where LG is starting to gain in brand recognition, the company hopes to gain some international ground on its competitors.
Indeed, the Korean phone maker has established manufacturing plants in a number of worldwide locations, including India (Pune), Brazil (Taubate), Mexico (Mexicalli), two in China (Yantai and Qingdao), and in its home of Korea (Pyeongtaek). Poised to move up from its number four spot internationally, LG plans “aggressive brand marketing”.
In keeping with the cutting edge of things, expect LG to expand its Research and Development department with a 25% increase in R&D staff (from 4000 to 5000). Innovations in the way of more EDGE-enabled and 3G phones should be on the way, as well as the development of key 4G technology and IEEE.
